Rediscovering the Humanitarian in Me

Early on this semester, I decided that I would do pure commercial law modules because 1) duh, I'm going into commercial litigation and 2) it would be a breath of fresh air from the human rights modules that dominate my resume.

I love my modules. I love construction law the most, and maritime law is fascinating. I'm learning new skills with mediation and arbitration. Et j'adore apprends le francais!

My construction law class ended at 9.15 pm today. I was walking towards my car. As I was about to step out of the building, my eye glanced over the board next to the exit. My eyes landed on a poster with the words "constitutional" and "human rights".

All of a sudden, I felt a pang of profound sadness somewhere deep inside of me.

It has been a long time since I did or read anything related to human rights. I subscribe to the RSS Feed of Human Rights Watch, but there are 40 new feeds waiting to be read, just because I don't have the time to read them.

I thought back to my days in Cape Town, and I still remember, as clear as day, the gratefulness in my client's voice when he called to say that he and his family had been granted South African citizenship after 7 long years of being a refugee.

It's such a strong calling in life for me! And I'll be going back to it, but I first have to do what it takes to survive the first few years working in Singapore.

GO ME!

John sent his representative to meet me in Singapore. Here's a picture of us conducting personal diplomacy:

What a busy month! An apt prelude to March which will get just kill me - but I'LL SURVIVE!
